Brilliant Service from the boss Nico, who organised online, and our driver guide for the day, David. They were the only Company to offer a genuinely personalised service. In my and my son-in-laws case, that was a full day in the mountains for just the 2 of us, with a professional guide. No way did we wish to be part of a big group- been there, done that. Our pre-planned route centred on the famous 25 Fontes - spectacular! This is the proper way to see the levadas and mountains. Not herded around like cattle! Trip cost e285 - not cheap but you get what you pay for with this Company. Call Nico. He will tailor your trip to your exact requirements! Trip date 22nd December 2024.

Our group of 8 started our weeklong trip with Diogo on a jeep tour. He took us all around the island off road and on. Diogo was very friendly, funny and overall a fantastic guide. We also did 2 different hikes with David and he showed us the best sights as well as took us to a fantastic lunch at a cute little cafe.

I has great experience with our one day experience with guide Tobias. We were with a cruise trip that only stopped in Funchal for a couple hours, also the weather was a bit rainy and cloudy over the day. However, Tobias arranged the tour in the way that can cover the most extraordinary views, also made sure we enjoyed most sunshine as possible over the day. Very satisfied and would recommend to everyone. Funchal is a fabulous place and will visit specifically for it in the future.

I booked in advance 2 trips with Up Mountain Madeira. My experience with them was incredible, i was impressed by their professionalism and availability, providing great trips for small groups. Communication with them was also very smooth. I highly recommend the trip Jeep Safari to Volcanic Pools & Paul da Serra, which is a trip from the south to the north of the island. The northern side is simply fantastic. During this trip we had an amazing guide, Edgar, who provided plenty of interesting informations which are hard to find otherwise. See you soon, guys!

Fantastische hike gedaan bij zonsopgang van Pico Areeiro naar Pco Ruivo begeleidt door David. Begeleiding was erg goed, David had alle aandacht voor de groep en bepaalde het juiste tempo en wist veel te vertellen over het ontstaan van de route en de omgeving.

Following a reccomendation, we have just had a fantastic jeep safari. The guys ar so friendly, its easy to arrange and superb value for money. If youre looking for something tailored to your requirements, we highly recommend.

We booked our Sunrise in Pico do Areeiro and Laurisilva walk Half Day tour with Up Mountain Madeira mainly because we had previosly taken a tour with them a few years ago. Both tours were excellent, outstanding guides, great value for money and as there are lots of tour operators now we went with someone we knew and had experience of. We were not dissapointed. While taking a transatlantic cruise with a stop in Funchal, a few of us decided to do a hike on our own and connected with Nico to facilitate transport. Due to an unforseen medical issue onboard the ship had to divert course to enable a helicopter evacuation of a passenger. Due to this our arrival time was changed putting the original hike plan in jeopardy. Instead of just canceling everything Nico suggested a couple alternatives that ended up being just as amazing if not more so than the original hike was going to be. When we finished the hike Niko was waiting for us at the trail head, and took us to a local spot for some awesome Pancha and Nikita, and we made it back to the ship in plenty of time. I would recommend him to anybody looking for something to do in Funchal.

Nico made our whole day such an amazing experience, having been planning to propose at sunrise for months, he talked me through his suggestions and tips. Could not recommend Nico, and the company more, if you are looking to do a hike or tour, look no further!!

Three of us only had 1 day to explore Madeira and we were very pleased with Nico as our guide. We selected to go in the old army jeep and enjoyed this open air ride. He took us to various points on the island and was very knowledgeable regarding the area. We would highly recommend having Nico as your guide and wish that we could have had more time with him. Wir haben die Sonnenaufgangstour zu Sao Lourenco gebucht und hatten das Glück Davide als Guide zu haben. Er hat uns pünktlich abgeholt und ist mit uns dann entspannt zum Parkplatz gefahren. Leider hat es geregnet und einige der Reisegruppe sind umgekehrt (und wurden abgeholt), Davide ist mit uns aber weiter gegangen. Es hat sich wirklich gelohnt und war super nett. Ich würds immer wieder machen und kann s wärmstens empfehlen. Davide ist ein so angenehmer und sympathischer Guide! Gerne immer wieder.

Over a 2-week trip to Portugal with my wife and 23-year old daughter that included Madeira, riding in an open air jeep through the western part of the of the island was one of the top highlights of our trip. This company was recommended to us by a Portugal travel consultant, and the experience was fun, beautiful, and exhilarating! Although we had a general itinerary from Up Mountain, our guide Diogo customized the trip for us, regularly checking in to make sure we were prioritizing our time for the things we most enjoyed. We especially loved the excitement of off roading in the middle of lush forests. Diogo was fantastic--energetic, knowledgeable, funny, and a very skilled driver, navigating over the various terrains of the mountain. We also used Up Mountain for a wonderful Levada hike (reviewed separately). Great company; great experience! We highly recommend Up Mountain and the jeep tour!

We did the sunrise tour to Ponta de São Lourenço with Benny. Very relaxed, Benny exceeded our expectations, caring about all participants, having a coffee, tee, bananas and sweets, talking about the island, plants, birds, his lovely grandmother and much more. Absolute recommendation. Thanks, Benny

Une structure chaleureuse et à taille humaine où les touristes que nous étions ont eu limpression, pendant quelques heures, dêtre un peu du pays. The tour was amazing! We spent the day with a wonderful guide with great tips and interesting facts about the island. The car had no roof so you could stand up during the drive. It felt really special! They took us off the road which was another great experience. Some places we would not have been able to visit on our own because of the crowds and lack of parking, so it was really great to experience them with them. Nico showed us so many great viewpoints that I was amazed. The island itself is such a wonder, but having a local show you around is so much better! We loved it and hope to come back and do another tour soon!

Une randonnée à ne pas louper si vous venez sur madère! La réservation se fait facilement, Nicolau et Davide sont très arrangeants et agréables, ils parlent anglais couramment la communication est donc très facile. La randonné se fait d un point A à un point B (pas de boucle) ce qui permet de voir un maximum de paysages avec les explications du guide. La vue est à couper le souffle, la randonné se fait dans la bonne humeur au rythme de chacun et petite récompense à la fin avec un arrêt à Santana. Je recommande vivement!

We had a great time on the hike, David was an amazing guide, really relaxed and open to everyone s request for photo stops or other requests. We also wanted to do the Food and Drinks tour which was unfortunately not possible during our visit but Nico gave us an amazing list of restaurants/bars to try in Madeira. Thank you!

Brilliant way to see the island! We were recommended Up Mountain by a friend, and Im so glad we used this company. Small groups, we got picked up from our hotel in Funchal, and got to go through tiny villages and places that other tours dont go through. Our guide was local, and had lots of knowledge of the sourounding area, plants, history etc. Fantastic tour!

We did the Land of Water walk with David this last weekend. I would highly recommend doing this hike with Up Mountain Madeira for the following reasons: 1) David was such a fun guide; personable, knowledgeable, and passionate about the area. We did the odd foray away from the busy routes, making a great hike, into a spectacular day. 2) We were lucky that Up Mountain had space for us and especally grateful to Nico who I reached out to the evening before to ask a host of questions. Not only was Nico responsive and patient, we were also booked on the hike for hotel pick-up the next morning with zero fuss 3) Its an intimate tour operator, with a max of eight people. The two of us had planned to go self-guided but were disuaded by multiple locals who noted difficulty in getting there and a risk of getting lost / injured. Until finding Up Mountain, a depressing prospect faced us (coach tour with too many people). I would rate them over doing your own walk as, whilst the main route is largely well signposted, there are various paths leading away from the main route to explore.

A great service friendly and easy to deal with, a unique drive in an umm alter jeep. our guide was excellent, friendly, fun and extremely knowledgeable of madeira, giving great insight into life on the island as well as plants and nature and other places to go visit or eat at. Standing in the back of the truck while offroading was an awesome experience. An absolute must do, great way of seeing the island !

Diego was our tour guide. We had an incredible experience with him. He explained the history of the people and island. Knew all about the local plants. He stopped in a little village for us to enjoy Poncha and local celebration cake. He recommended a fantastic restaurant in town and made sure we knew where the taxi stand was to get back to the boat. He made us feel like family. I would request him when I return.

We had an amazing on our Jeep tour around Pico do Arieiro and Satana (and many more places). Our guide Diogo knew everything about Madeira from the local plants, geography, history and culture. We learnt so much. We also had so much fun going around the Island and we did so much in just 7 hours. Highly recommend Up Mountain Madeira. No complaints!!

Had an amazing day out during our stay in Madeira. Ricardo was so friendly and took us to so many gorgeous places , which we probably wouldn t have got out to see if we hadn t booked it. Ricardo was also so knowledgeable about everything around him. We tried some traditional drinks which although they were strong they were so good ! and traditional food which I wouldn t have thought to order myself. I would definitly recommend booking !!

We spent a day with Nico and a day with Diego and had a great experience on both days. Very personable, attentive, and knowlegable. They took us to so many great spots on the island with a focus on local establishments and beautiful locations. We did East on one day and West the other. We could never have done this on our own with a rental. And much better than being on bus or larger tour. Would highly recommend Up Mountain Madeira!!!

Highly recommend Nico and Up Mountain tours - we will be booking again when we return to Madeira. We enjoyed a full day personal tour which was very good value for money. Nico was kind, friendly and informative throughout the day. We had emailed previously things we might like to do and this was all accommodated but equally we valued the flexibility on the day meaning we could make a change to enjoy a swim which was facilitated with Nicos local knowledge. We loved lunch enjoying traditional espetadas and again Nico facilitated this at a wonderful restaurant and we enjoyed lunch together. If you want a truly personal tour then go for this you will have a day of memory making and learn about this incredibly beautiful island.

We had a great experience doing the sunrise tour! The booking and payment was really easy (we paid via PayPal) and the trip was very well organised. They have a secret spot for the sunrise which is not with the crowds and a better photo opportunity. The guide is really knowledgeable and is happy for people to go at their own pace (so you can either go ahead or stay behind a bit if you want photos etc). Small group so you are not waiting around and we got there early to avoid the crowds. Would definitely recommend booking trips with this company if you are in Madeira.

We booked the Sunrise on Pico do Areeiro and Hike to Pico Ruivo PR1 with the Up Mountain and absolutely loved!! David was our guide. They were very pontual on the pick up, selected a perfect location for the sunrise and the tour was really nice. David knew every answer for our questions, we learned a lot. The group was a perfect size and David did a great job keeping everyone together even with different speeds. Definitely recommend their services!

I chose Up mountain because of the reviews here on Google, because it wasnt at the top of the results (I prefer smaller businesses and more personal service) and I hope this helps you do the same. Nico coordinated everything for us. Out guide and driver was Diogo. We went with Diogo for 2 consecutive days and had lots of fun. First day was supposed to be to the east, but it was raining and foggy on the mountain top so we switched and went to the north western part of the island, via the Fanal forest. Off road makes these trips a lot more fun and we got to see beautiful views, places, villages during our ride Diogo was fun, great sense of humor, laughing all the time. The next day we went to the east and the weather was great. Dont forget to carry a wind breaker or jacket with you, as going to the mountain peaks guarantees colder weather and potential rain... Highly recommended...

Een super leuke dag gehad in de 4x4 jeep. De privé-tour werd helemaal afgestemd naar mijn wensen. Daarnaast ook vele stops gemaakt om het uitzicht te bewonderen en lokaal fruit te proberen. Een aanrader als je in Madeira bent!

We had Niko for two days - Niko went over and above the call of duty - he made sure we saw everything we wanted to see and shared with us some of his favorite sights. Nico and Miguel were the perfect tour guides! We had initially booked a one day tour and we had so much fun that we then booked another day out with them. They tailored our trips to what we wanted, showed us parts of the island we wouldn t have seen before, and just made us laugh all day. This was truly the highlight of our holiday and as soon as we re back we ll be booking more trips with them. Oh and before I forget the value was incredible for the service provided. 100% recommend!!

Nico was great to work with to get our custom tour together. Diego was our tour guide and he did a phenomenal job with the tour. Pick up and drop off were easy, he was accommodating to our needs whether it was stopping to get snacks, stopping at viewpoints to snap pictures along the drive, and taking us to the best spots around the island. Lovely walk by the levada. Our guide was very accommodating and went his way to show us the beauty of Madeira. We also ended up climbing and crawling in the water, but only because we asked for it . It was not only fun but educating. We learned things about the surrounding nature that we would have never noticed on our own. Recommended!

We did the sunrise pico to pico hike with David on September 27. It was an amazing experience and everything was organised very well. Nico picked us up in time and drove us to the starting point. We watched the sunrise a little bit further on the trail (there were less people) and started hiking after the sunrise. We were lucky with the weather and the views were spectacular. I would definitely recommend UpMountain to family and friends. I found the services professional, personal, friendly and patient. David is also a great photographer.

If you want a fantastic day out on the island, Nico is the man. Hes friendly, knowledgeable, funny and kind. We first met Nico 10 years ago when we took one of his jeep tours. It was the most memorable part of our Madeira holiday. So when we came back I knew I needed to contact Nico. Our booking was arranged quickly and easily by email and he met us at the time and place we agreed. We were an adult group of 5 and took the open top jeep around the island, putting our trust in Nico. Checking we were happy with his ideas we spent the day visiting a local fishing village, wine tasting, off roading up in the mountains, visiting Cabo Girao and down a cable car to an isolated beach and fruit plantation. It was all amazing and very personalised for us. Nico is extremely passionate about Madeira and has so much local knowledge to share, including probably the best place to eat on the island. We had the most amazing meal and at the best price. I cannot recommend Nico highly enough for anyone looking for a good value adventure with a local person with a great sense of humour. He truly is a star.

Great service from Nico and David at UpMountainMadeira. Nico was great at responding to messages before the day, and on the day David led a small team along the PR1 trail from Pico de Areiro to Pico Ruivo. David went out of his way to make time for each participant, and he shared a lot of useful information and kept the group moving at an appropriate pace with time for everybody to take pictures and have rests when needed. Awesome day, and the personalised service was amazing. Thank you so much, and I look forward to using the company again on my next trip to Madeira!

We really enjoyed the full day levada walk with David. Nico was super communicative in advance and we had a wonderful time with his colleague, David, who picked us up at the marina where we were staying and drove us to the trailhead and guided us on the walk. It was great to have someone who knows the area with us and handling all the logistics so we could maximize our time on the trail instead of trying to figure out where to go. David was also really knowledgeable about the flora so we stopped periodically and learned a lot from him. At the end of the walks, David ran back to the van and brought it to where we ended so we didnt need to double back on the walk. Then we went to get a poncha at a local spot - the best poncha we had in a week in Madeira! Highly highly recommend this group - nice to work with a small company and to deal with the owner directly.

Nico, Roberto, and David all do a great job. They are very informative with knowledge in all areas of Madeira life. Nico is very responsive to all inquiries. We did several tours, Levada Walks, food tours, and cant complement them enough. I highly recommend Up Mountain Madeira for your tour needs.

Me and my partner booked a tour with this company and we are so happy we did! We went along the southwest coast of the island. We even went off road with the 4x4. The views were spectacular and our tour guide (Edgar) was great! Edgar is a calm and friendly guy who made us feel comfortable from the start. We did the beutiful hike to Pico Areiro at the sunrise. We were really lucky with the weather and we did an amazing hike. I liked a lot all the experience and also the guide was really nice. I think the best way to do the hike the Pico is at the sunrise with the guide in a small group like we did

We had a wonderful private jeeptour with Nicolau in August. He took us to very special places and told us so much about the island. We even went into the vineyard of his uncle! We had such a good time and we were fortunate to be able to book another jeeptour the same week with Ricardo. We had so much fun with him as well, playing music and driving to spectaculair views and to the natural pools.

Based on all the glowing reviews, we booked two hiking tours and a half day jeep tour with Up Mountain Madeira. We had a fantastic experience and wouldn t hesitate in recommending them. Nico and his team are AMAZING! It was our first trip to Madeira, so we were happy to find a small, local company with professional guides who offer a more personal approach. We learned a lot on each tour, and the logistics were seamless. Our two hiking tours were with Carlos and Nico - both friendly, fun, and helpful people. It felt like we were hiking with a friend who was super knowledgeable about the area - where we were hiking and Madeira in general. We did the sunrise hikes along PR 1 and PR 8. Simply stunning! In talking to friends who did the same hikes, we definitely learned and saw more because we had informative, professional guides. Our last half day tour was with Edgar, another friendly and entertaining guide. He took us on a jeep tour up into the mountains, to a viewpoint of Nun s Valley, and for some Poncha. Afterwards, we went to Camara de Lobos, where we stayed (the other couple in our small group returned to Funchal) to explore a bit longer and have a tasty seafood lunch at a place Nico recommended. Overall, we had an absolutely wonderful time exploring parts of the island with Up Mountain Madeira.

From the first time I communicated with Up Mountain Madeira, I was treated with such kindness! Nico was very responsive and very helpful when booking the tours. We spent 5 days on Madeira island. We booked a private Jeep tour around the island and the PR 1 Pico to Pico sunrise hike. On the Jeep tour, we explored all around the northwest side of the island. The guide was very fun and nice! He took us off roading and to some very cool spots on the island that we otherwise would have never known to visit! The PR1 at sunrise was an amazing hike!! We learned so much from our guide about the island. We went with a small group and it was very enjoyable. Overall, our experience was amazing with up mountain Madeira!! I highly highly recommend them. When I visit Madeira again, I will definitely be contacting them!!!

We had a great walk to Rabacal and 25 fontes with David in a small group of 5. Sooo much better than our experience in a much larger group. David was informative, cheerful and went out of his way to make sure we had an enjoyable walk. Book with this company- they are the best weve met in Madeira

Ricardo is a brilliant tour guide. He took his time to tell us about the herbs and fruits growing along our way, and our stops for sustenance were excellent. It was lovely to get off road ànd see Maderia from this perspective.

We took an 8 hour private van tour for 3. The guide (Renaldo) picked us up at the ship and our first stop was Camera de Lobos, a picturesque fishing village with an beautiful chapel to the fisherman. Next we stopped at Cape Girão to the west of Funchal, the highest sea cliff in Europe. We travelled the mountain roads making numerous stops at scenic overlooks and other attractions. We toured the Northwest of the island where we had an amazing lunch near the lava pools at Porto Moniz and the Seixal natural pools. the scenery and sights were amazing!! The guide was very knowledgeable and obviously enjoyed showing us his island of which he was clearly very proud. I had used Up Mountain Madeira on a previous trip a few years ago. I had taken a half day 4X4 tour and had no hesitation in using them again. My wife enjoyed the tour so much she wants to take Portuguese classes so we can return for an extended stay.

This was one of the most wonderful hikes of my life. Nico was really quick, communicative and helpful in arranging the tour in a time that tourism just starts again. Bennie was the perfect guide, explaining a lot about the island, the plants etc. He was looking out for all four of us, although we walked at our own pace. We enjoyed the sunrise at Pico do Arieiro and drove further to Pico Ruivo to do the hike the other way. Nico and Bennie know are very kind, informative and good at what they do. We had a fantastic experience with Up Mountain Madeira - from seeing the sun rise over the mountains to hiking between Pico Ruivo and Pico Areiro, they were knowledgeable, fun and made the whole experience epic! If you re looking for hiking in Madeira, fully recommended.

I was looking for a tour that combines watching the sunrise at Pico do Arieiro and the Arieiro-Ruivo walk (PR1) and I was happy to find it at Up Mountain Madeira. Nico and David, our guides were amazing, they were very friendly and open and great with communication. They offered a pick up service and gave us recommendations about the island throughout the tour. I felt like they treated me as a friend rather than just a customer. They ensured that everyone in the group is having a great time, it was a very fun and personal experience. The walk itself was out of this universe, if you dont mind a challenging hike, make sure to go for it! I did one private walk and also a group hike with UpMountain. They were knowledgeable, reliable and professional. Each walk was at a good pace and they always made sure to find quiet places to take in the view without other people around. At the end of the walk they also took us to a local bar to celebrate with a poncha, a great way to finish the day!

Nico and David took us on a wonderful hike from Pico Arero ( the white bubble) to Pico Ruivo , we walked through tunnels and up very steep steps , the views were spectacular and getting up for the sunrise was well worth it , despite it being freezing . I would highly recommend Upmountain , they were friendly and fun. Nothing was too much trouble. 5 stars

The owner (Nico) seemed nice and knowledgeable but the other guide (David) was there just to walk with us, didn t keep the group together either. They tried hard for us to see the sunset, but unfortunately the clouds were not in our favor this time.

Absolutely wonderful time hiking the PR1. They are friendly and professional and flexible. They tried to find another group to share the cost with me but I was determined to do the hike and it s great to have them manage the logistics and have a companion on the trails. I don t think I would have been able to do an out and back hike so having Nico waiting on the far side was wonderful.

We came to Funchal with almost no plan what to do in the next few days. And then we found Up Mountain Madeira. Nico replied shortly after we send our query and we arranged a tour with pick up around 100m from our hostel (we book on Monday a tour for Wednesday). We chose a 4x4 tour (Vineyards and Poncha Jeep Tour to the Vineyards, Nuns Valley View and Cabo Girao). This was the perfect choice. Our host, Ricardo, proved to be an excellent guide, superb driver (you will appreciate that on steepy roads of Madeira) and a man devoted to local heritage. In 4 hours we managed to see some staples of the Island and tried great poncha pescador. The views were stunning. Even though the weather wasnt the best we still enjoyed the tour very much. The tour was worth every penny.

Informações importantes e que mostram que ser guia turístico é preciso realmente muito, e não é fácil guiar horas e ir explicando o muito envolvente, fiquei a admirar porque acho positivo em que as pessoas amam o que fazem e tornam o dia melhor de quem os rodeia. E ainda tivemos hipótese de ver espécies de folhas e encontramos o maracujá banana, que os turistas adoraram provar e nós também. Quero dizer que irei repetir as outras tours que esta empresa tem e que irei fazer a vereda da ponta de São Lourenço por conselho do nosso guia. Recomendo, sem dúvida! This is probably the best tour you can get around here. Very friendly people who are in love with this island, with their home. They will tell you about the island in their eyes, theyll take you places others wont. Ive been on quite a few tours but none was even remotely as perfect as both tours we had with UMM. Thanks!

We have enjoyed both of our trips with UMM with their great 4x4s allowing us to see and explore parts of the island other tour organisations can t reach. So nice to be away from the other visitors. Nico and his team managed to make our day feel they were purpose built just for us. Our guide Ricardo was knowledgeable and friendly. The visit to the south-west allowed us to see a less touristic side to Madeira but was in no way a second best day out. Our second trip took us to Santana via many back roads. Given the popularity of the destination we barely saw any other tours all day, and because we stopped at small bars and restaurants on both trips we felt we met some genuine Madeiran hospitality and were able to contribute directly to the local economy with our holiday cash. All in all a fantastic experience. Highly recommended

We enjoyed a beautiful sunrise followed by coffee before our morning walk on the northeastern side of Madeira. Our host, David, was very informative and told us all about the flora and fauna of the island. We were glad to have left early, not only because we saw the sunrise but the walk was becoming very busy on our way back. My wife and I decided to go with Up Mountain Madeira for some guided tours around the island when visiting for our honeymoon in September 2019. We could not be more happy with our choice! This company was absolutely amazing in all aspects. Nico was our main point of contact and he was able to work with us to make our trip exactly what we wanted. We went on three separate tours, the FarWest 4x4 tour with Miguel which was amazing, and two levada walks with David (25 fountains Risco in Rabacal & Sunrise in Pico Do Areeiro/Hike to Pico Ruivo). They were excellent guides and all the group sizes were nice and small for each tour (6 max when we went). Both Miguel and David were excellent guides! They were super friendly and able to teach us so much about Madeiras history, culture and information/areas we would not have experienced on our own. We will definitely return to Madeira and will be doing more tours with them in the future :).

Nico and Up Mountain Madeira are simply the best tour operation in Madeira. We have gone on tours with him each year for the past 3 years. His evening drinks & dinner tour is our favourite. We go on it every year. His sightseeing tours are amazing with him sharing his knowledge and passion for the Island. He always takes us to most authentic local restaurants that most you would never find. We ve also gone on tours with his uncle Ricardo and cousin Diego. They re great too.

We had the best time hiking to Pico Ruivo with Up Mountain Maderia! Nico picked us up early in the morning right outside where we were staying. After a short car ride we arrived at Pico do Arieiro to watch the sunrise over the clouds. A memory we will never forget. From there our walking guide David took us through a series of peaks and tunnels before finally reaching the summit of Pico Ruivo. The peak has some of the most spectacular views you could ever imagine. A tough walk but well worth it for the views at the top! Very lucky to have used this company for a days hiking in Madeira. We walked through the Rabacal area which is stunningly beautiful. We especially wanted to walk with a small group and David, our guide, was exceptional. He made sure we got the most out of the experience. I would not hesitate to use this company again when we are next in Madeira.When you see the size of some of the walking groups you just know that you are getting a better experience.

I traveled to Madeira alone and from the beginning I knew I wanted to hike the PR01 trail. Although I went alone, the Up Mountain staff gave me the best experience possible! During the entire hike, David (the guide) explained the history of the island, the description of the fauna and flora and we stopped whenever necessary. At the end of the trail, Nico and David even took me to drink the traditional Poncha da madeira! Besides having a memorable experience in nature, it was also a very cultural experience. Nico and David also gave me recommendations of places to experience the islands traditional gastronomy and they were always in contact with me until the end of my holidays in Madeira. Although I went alone, I never felt alone! A special thanks to Nico and David for making my trip to Madeira so special!

Madeira mit Up Mountain zu entdecken ist Erlebnis Pur. Sowohl die Organisation, wie auch die Guides sind ausgezeichnet. Die Touren sind sehr persönlich, da diese nur in kleinen Gruppen angeboten werden. Die (Off-Road) Fahrten mit dem UMM sind wunderbar. Man fühlt sich sehr sicher, da es geübte Fahrer sind. Alles ist gut organisiert, von der Route bis hin zum Mittagessen. Man muss sich um nichts kümmern, nur den Tag geniessen. SEHR empfehlenswert.

We did the A Little Taste of Madeira as alternative for our cruise shore excursion. It was a great experience, we loved all of the tour. Nico is a wonderful guide with enormous knowledge of the island, the people and customs.

If youre looking for an incredible sunrise hike at Pico Arieiro to Pico Ruivo then look no further! We arrived at the peak before sunrise and watched the sun come up then started our hike to the other peak. Its important to start early because the trail can get very busy later in the day. These guys are great at what they do, professional and funny as hell. The tour company is a small, local business so you know they are passionate and knowledgeable about the area. I will definitely book again with this company in the future!

I contacted Nico ahead of our trip to Madeira, where I hoped to see the house and area that my grandmother was born and raised in. He was so enthusiastic about helping me on this journey and we planned two full-day private tours with him. I cannot say enough great things about this experience! We were picked up right on time and spent the first day exploring the western side of Madeira. Nicos expert driving set me at ease (mostly, haha!) on the scary steep roads of this island. He was so informative about the history and culture of Madeira, and stopped many times for us to view and take photos of the magnificent valleys, mountains, waterfalls, ocean and vineyard views! When we arrived in Porto Moniz, the town where my ancestors lived, we actually met a distant relative of mine, thanks to Nicos advance research and networking with the local people. I could really go on and on, this was the #1 best day of our three-week trip to Portugal, just amazing! On the second day we had another driver, David, who took us all over the eastern side of Madeira, another fabulous day with a terrific guide! Due to low lying clouds we were unable to see anything from the top of the highest mountain, but that just gives us a good excuse to return, which we really hope to do. We opted not to do the off-road tour and instead were in a very nice VW minivan and stayed on the main roads. It was perfect for us but Im sure the jeep tours are fantastic too. If you are going to Madeira, do yourself a favor and book Up Mountain, you wont regret it!

Just got back from Madeira! We went on the Sunrise peaks hike with David and Nico and it was absolutely incredible. It surpassed our expectations and the views took our breath away -- literally and figuratively. Could not recommend Up Mountain Madeira more!

Spent the week of 5/20 on Madeira and based on on line reviews booked the Flowereast 4x4 full day tour of the Island. By far out best day on the island . Madeira is beautiful on its own but to have the opportunity to be taken off the beaten path, into the mountains and forest, and to stop along the way to learn about the local flowers, wild herbs and trees was incredible. We also made pit stops along the way for coffee, an incredible lunch, and some of the best poncha on the island. Our guide Ricardo was not only knowledgeable, informative , professional and a great driver, he was also warm, funny, considerate and an all round great guy. Our 4 other tour mates from the UK were great and it all made for a perfect day. We loved the tour so much we the booked Far(o)west full day tour for later that week. The scenery is very different but equally as interesting. Our guide Diogo was smart, entertaining , warm and an equally excellent driver. His enthusiasm for his life on the island was infectious. Once again we learned about the local herbs and plants on that side of the island, had a great lunch and the opportunity to stop for a refresher. Up Mountain Madeira is a small family run operation and they excel at what they do. Two wonderful days! Highly recommended.

Our two days spent hiking the Picos and 25 Fountains with UpMountain Madeira were the absolute highlight of time in Madeira. The arrangements were very good, our guide arrived perfectly on time and all ran seamlessly both days. The sunrise on Pico Arieiro and hike to Pico Ruivo is perhaps the most exciting and exhilarating touring experience we have had considering our experience across many countries. Our day hiking the 25 Fountains & Risco waterfall was lovely. Our guide took us off the beaten path, meaning that we beat the crowds to many of the most scenic spots and got the best, most exciting experience possible and he was so knowledgeable and took the hikes at a nice pace. Seriously if you are reading this review as part of your trip planning, stop researching any further and book. You are most definitely not going to find a better way or better people to have the best adventure with on this stunning island

We have booked a full day day tour twice at Up Mountain Madiera, first the West Tour and a few days later the East tour. Our guide Ricardo has made sure that we have had a wonderful day with a lot of humor. The West Tour goes up the mountains to Porto Moniz where is time for a good lunch and back via Seixal. The East Tour goes through Pico do Areeiro, Santana (time again for a delicious lunch) and Porto da Cruz. The jeep really goes off-road. During both trips, Ricardo tells a lot about the origin of Madeira and the flora and fauna. The view of Pico do Areerio above the clouds is fantastic, but you also come to places where the standard tourist doesnt come. And of course he shows you how the Poncha is made. Go to Madeira and definitely book a day trip with them. Guaranteed a lot of fun in a small group (max 8).

Up Mountain Madeira makes sure you have an amazing experience during your vacation! I went to Madeira in July with my mum and we took two jeep tours and one guided hike. It was an incredible experience, highly recommended! The guides are local and will share a lot of interesting facts about the island, as well as answer any questions you might have. Yu will be brought off the beaten path and will only see other tourists in major places of interest. It felt more like traveling with friends rather than with a tour company!

Just did the amazing Sunrise on Pico do Areeiro and Hike to Pico Ruivo walk. We started off early in the morning, Nico and our guide David picked us up from the hotel and we drove up into the mountains for what was our first experience of the tour, amazing sunrise from the top of Pico do Areeiro from above the clouds with impressive views as far as the eye could see. Then the more challenging part came round, walking between the two peaks. For me particularly there were some difficult portions of the trail, mostly because I am somewhat afraid of heights but I can honestly say it was worthwhile arriving on Pico Ruivo. Amazing views, unbelievable nature and a satisfying sense of accomplishment being able to challenge oneself to get this far. The hike took us like approximately 4 hours. We walked down on the northern side of the island and stopped for coffee and some nice pastries in Santana. Saw the traditional Madeiran dwellings built of natural stone and thatched with straw, had a taste of the passion fruit banana and the traditional poncha drink on our way back in a very quaint local bar which was an authentic experience along side local people. What I loved about the tour was the friendliness and casualness of the guys from up mountain, contacted them via whatsapp only a day in advance, and they picked us up from the hotel, just like that, the next morning at 6 am. Really liked David, our guide, very professional yet so natural and warm, rather than a tour this felt like a casual hike with some friends. We were only 7, including our guide and chatted our way between the two peaks.

I dont even know where to begin. These guys are the BEST people Ive ever met. And thats before I even talk about their company! They did everything and more for me and my wife. We came to Madeira for our honeymoon and we were not organised. We planned to do a walk the night before! Up Mountain Madeira, moved things around and got staff in to carry out a private tour last minute that they had not planned for. Who else does this?! They showed us the place between heaven and earth and took us on an epic trail through the interior of the island. After that, a suprise local treat of cakes and poncha. This company dont just do their jobs. They share their passion and love of all things Madeira. Their energy and love for what they do shows, and thanks to them I have made memories for life. The highlight of our trip! We were worried that the jeep tour might be a bit touristy with lots of other people but we were proven so wrong. Our guide was very knowledgeable of the local area, he made the trip fun and relaxed. The regular breaks were perfectly spaced and the day flew by. We were part of a small group and the atmosphere was just fantastic! Great value for money and as I said, our favourite part of our holiday - I would highly recommend Up Mountain

Everything about our hike was perfect... from pick up to drop off. One of the most stunning view, surreal, you feel like you re in a different world. Above the clouds. The most beautiful sunrise and gorgeous mountains covered in a sea of clouds. Our guide was knowledgeable and attentive and felt part of the group. I ve been on a lot of hikes and this was one of the best!

We booked the Far West Tour before we arrived in Madeira (recommended by our friends) and we certainly werent disappointed. Booking via email with Nico beforehand was no hassle and UMM turned up at our hotel, exactly as agreed. The infectious Ricardo, with his vast and varied local knowledge and passion for Madeira, made this tour very enjoyable. Certainly not a run of the mill tour. On the back of the Far West tour, we decided to book the Flower East tour. A quick email to Nico and all was sorted. Again, our guide Ricardo, ensured we had a very memorable tour, of this very different side of the island! Thank you UMM

Done the east tour with David and we had a fantastic trip , booked through email a month before we arrived with no deposit taken and was worried they might not turn up but he arrived bang on time . We got lucky as it was supposed to be a shared trip but a couple dropped out at the last minute so we had a private tour all day so a bonus for us . The trip was fantastic with plenty of stops to take photos with amazing views and David even snapped a few pics of us with lovely background scenery. We stopped for somewhere to eat which is obviously a prearranged restaurant and we could eat and drink as much as we liked and the food was lovely and the people who Owned the restaurant were very friendly and attentive and to be honest we were a bit embarrassed how cheap it was for what we had which was plentiful and tasty . I would thoroughly recommend this company as you get a friendly and informative information about the flora on the island as you travel around and always feel chilled and not rushed in the process. Go book a trip now you won t be disappointed

Wir haben die Sunrise-Tour vom Pico do Arieiro zum Pico Ruivo gebucht und es war echt klasse. Wir wurden überpünktlich von Nicolau und David anunserer Unterkunft abgeholt und der Sonnenaufgang auf dem Pico do Arieiro war einfach atemberaubend. Die Wanderung machten wir in einer kleinen, sehr angenehmen Gruppe gemeinsam mit Guide David, der ein sehr netter Gesprächspartner war und viel über die Strecke zu erzählen wusste. Er guckte immer, ob alle gut mitkamen und brachte uns sicher von Gipfel zu Gipfel. Die Tour war teilweise schon fordernd, aber niemals überfordernd. Vom Pico Ruivo nahmen wir den kurzen Abstieg und nicht den langen Weg wieder zurück zum Arieiro, was sehr angenehm war. Nicolau wartete schon am Parkplatz auf uns mit dem Van, umuns nach Santana zu bringen. Dort gab es viel Alkoholisches in einem traditionellen Srohhaus, im Anschluss brachte uns David noch zu einem Geheimtipp bei Funchal, wo wir den traditionellen Poncha probieren durften. Es war eine rundum gelungene Tour! Wir würden jeder Zeit wieder eine Tour mit Up Mountain buchen!

The sunrise mountain hike was SPECTACULAR! Honestly the best tour Ive ever been on! Such breathe taking views followed by nice challenging hike with a stop of Poncha at the end. Our guide David was awesome and Nico was so accommodating with travel and registration. You could not ask for a better way to spend a day on the island! Highly recommend!

Great tour, I chose this company as he was a smaller independent operator. David our driver was very good company and made our trip very special. The vehicle was ex Portuguese military which was an interesting talking point. Loved this trip would recommend.

We went on a 4x4 tour of the East side one day, and a tour of the West side another day. Both trips were the highlight of our weeklong trip to Madeira. Ricardo and Diogo proved to be the best tour guides I have ever encountered on my travels - they were so knowledgable, offering great insights into the island and were just as entertaining, creating a great atmosphere within the 4x4. The lunch offers were amazing value for money and delicious. We would definitely recommend any of the tours with either of the boys and will definitel be returning for a Levada walk with the guys when we return to Maderia.
