Very bad experience! Don’t believe this company! They are frauds and deceive people! We rented Skoda (AZ50JM) on January 3d. We made photos of all the damages. After we brought the car back on January 8th, in 1 hour we received the document for 305 euro for damage that WE DID NOT do! We sent an email with photo proof of that damage that existed already with date and time when we picked a car! They did not answer! Then we called them and they told they would check and send back the email with changes! Nobody sent back. Nobody called back! Today they charged 305 euro from deposit! Maybe lots of people already paid for this damage :(. Very disappointed! We will continue trying to receive back our money and will try all the methods. This was the first one! Maybe this review will help and we will not need to do anything else. But we don’t recommend this company of liars!
CAREFUL: Make sure you inspect the vehicle during pickup, take pictures/videos of all damages and email the evidence to the company asap. Read my story below. On the day of my return to the US, I received an email from the company saying I damaged the rear bumper of the Mercedes B200 and a charge on my credit card for $2700+. The bumper was already damaged. I have a picture made when we picked up the car. I emailed them with an attached photo of the damage which I saw during pickup, and they promptly replied, apologizing for the mistake and refunded almost the full amount. Perhaps the discrepancy is because of some transaction fee or conversion from euro to usd. I emailed them again, thanking for the prompt resolving of the issue, and asked them to refund the remaining small difference. Will update my review later. Original review: One of the best car rental experiences in my life! Both gentlemen at pickup and drop off were very kind and helpful and provided clear instructions. The Mercedes was very clean and in great condition. Both pickup and dropoff were very very quick. Would love to rent here again. Highly recommend!
Really friendly and very efficient folks at the counter. Suggested a higher horsepower vehicle since we mentioned we would be touring the island. Extra cost worth it because there are some pretty steep inclines on Madeira! Folks at the counter were helpful both with the rental process and giving us some tips about getting around. It's rare for me to leave bad reviews, but in this case I can't help it. When I see how worthless this company is, I can already tell you that you're going to get ripped off. I spent 1 week in Madeira and I wanted to go through this agency which was well rated. So I filled in everything online, and made the payment. From that moment on I was stuck on a page and nothing happened, no confirmation, and no redirection to the site. Thinking it was a site bug, I repeated my request the next day and exactly the same thing happened. No email validation either. To my great surprise, I was debited twice for the amounts without having any confirmation of payment by email or confirmation with a number and the conditions for collecting the car on arrival... So I tried to contact the company. The store salesman opened a ticket with the billing department to see if a partial or total refund could be made, given that the technical problem was clearly on their side. But since then I've heard nothing from either the billing department or the person who told me they'd transferred my request, despite my numerous reminders. Before committing yourself with them, even if the rates and prices are very attractive, be very careful or don't book by internet. Mathias
We had a very disappointing experience with Madeira Rent. Here’s what happened: When we arrived, we had reserved a Fiat 500. However, the employee immediately started pressuring us to pay for a €90 "upgrade," claiming the Fiat 500 wouldn’t handle the hills in Madeira. We didn’t believe this—why would they rent out a car unsuitable for the island? When we insisted on sticking with the Fiat 500, they suddenly said it wasn’t available and gave us a “free upgrade” because it was our first time on Madeira. Instead of the small car we wanted, we ended up with a huge vehicle, which made navigating the island's narrow streets stressful. We would have preferred the Fiat 500. Thankfully, we returned the car on time, without any damage, and with the same fuel level as when we picked it up. Everything seemed fine—until the next day, when we received an email accusing us of not returning the car and asking where it was. This led to a lot of back-and-forth emails, wasting time, only to find out that one of their employees had forgotten to update their records. If that wasn’t enough, a few days after we returned home, they charged €60 to our credit card with no explanation whatsoever. Conclusion: Be very cautious with this company. Don’t accept unnecessary paid upgrades, and keep an eye on your credit card for unauthorized charges. This experience left a very sour impression of what should have been a seamless rental process.
Our car was supposedly not ready when we arrived at the desk, and we would have to pay a 140 euro supplement for a different car. After waiting for an hour, we got to the desk again and they told us our car may not be a good pick for the mountains, and offered to switch to another car for 100 euros. Basically, they were trying to screw us over. We declined, and were given a car which had been waiting there all the time (cold engine, wasn't used in the last couple of hours). The car was beat up, pretty much every panel with a dent or scratch, and the tire pressure warning was on. The only good thing I can mention was about handing the car in, which was really swift, but I guess it had to be because you wouldn't have been able to distinguish any new damage from the damage already on there.

Unfortunately Madeira Rent has not lived up to the generally good reviews in our experience with them. Like many of the 1 or 2 star reviews here on Google, Madeira Rent charged our credit card an unexplained and unauthorised fee within hours of returning the car. No phone call, no explanatory email and to this day no receipt for the payment. It took them over a week to finally respond to an email of ours seeking an explanation for the charge. Apparently we had misplaced the vehicle documents. They supposedly had been in the glove compartment. We never even opened the glove compartment during our rental, we certainly never touched the vehicle documents as we were never required to show them to any authorities. The only conclusion can be that the documents were not in the vehicle when we first took possession of it. As there is no Madeira Rent representative present when you return the car there is no way of establishing anything. Under normal circumstances I would assume an honest mistake here but given that there are at least four other customers here who have also been charged for missing vehicle documents it is hard to be magnanimous. What are all these people doing with the vehicle documents? They are not that interesting. All in all this is very disappointing especially because until this charge we had a good experience with Madeira Rent. The car was in good condition, the lady at check out was competent and friendly. From the reviews I ve read here if you do choose to rent from this company, document everything with photos, every scratch and defect, the fuel level at check in and yes the presence or not of the vehicle documents. I ve added two stars to my initial review after we were reimbursed the charge to our credit card after two weeks of tedious email exchanges. If not for the unauthorised and unexplained charge, something that unfortunately seems to happen regularly, this would have been a 5 star review.

A pior experiência de Rent-a-Car! Com alguns meses de antecedência, fizemos a reserva online diretamente no site da Madeirarent e fizemos de imediato o pagamento da totalidade a mesma. Quando chegámos ao balcão no Aeroporto do Funchal, qual não é o espanto quando nos disseram que a uma reserva tinha sido cancelada por falta de pagamento, queriam que fosse paga nova reserva o que recusámos pois a mesma já estava confirmada e paga. Apresentámos o comprovativo do pagamento e confirmação da reserva impressos enviámos por mail o comprovativo, ainda assim ficaram de confirmar se realmente tinha sido paga com a contabilidade . lá tinham por acaso o carro com as caraterísticas que tínhamos reservado, levantámos o mesmo já com a indicação de necessidade de fazer a revisão dentro de 900kms e com deposito a 4/8. Tirámos fotos a todos os danos que o mesmo já apresentava. Ficaram de enviar o contrato por mail, coisa que só aconteceu após devolvermos o carro uma semana depois. Quando devolvemos o carro, ninguém se encontrava no parque e nem no balcão, no balcão tinha indicação que estava ausente e com um número de telefone. Ligámos e deram indicação para deixar a chave do carro a cartão do parque estacionamento no cofre que têm à entrada do balcão. Já em casa recebemos um mail com um documento de devolução do carro com danos no para choques traseiro (que não foram feitos por nós) e com pagamento de cerca de 350 euros que prontamente debitaram do cartão de crédito usado para deposito de garantia que tinha sido feito na entrega do carro. Enviámos as fotos a comprovar que os danos já existiam no carro, bem como outros de que tirámos fotos e que não estavam no relatório da entrega. Ficamos indignados porque o carro foi devolvido mais limpo do que quando foi levantado por nós, com mais combustível e sem qualquer dano feito por nós. Grave ainda o fato de o documento DOCUMENTO DE RECEÇÃO DO VEÍCULO aparecer assinado por mim o que nunca poderia ter acontecido uma vez que não tive contacto com nenhum representante da Madeirarent na devolução do carro, aparentemente usaram a minha assinatura por caneta digital feita no contrato. Após apresentarmos as fotos e os nossos argumentos, lá se dignaram a devolver o valor indevidamente cobrado pelos alegados danos. Fica aqui o testemunho para que tenham o máximo cuidado com esta empresa que do meu ponto de vista atuou de má fé!

My girlfriend and I had a good experience with this company, though keep your wits about you as with any rental company, aka check the car for damages, make sure you know what you re getting etc. We ordered online for an automatic transmission Renault Clio (or similar) with full coverage. When we arrived at the counter in Madeira they said that they have an Opel Corsa ready for us, and depending on what we want to be doing on the island we might want to consider upgrading to a Peugeot 2008 (extra 100 ) or even a T-roc (150 ). The argument was that more horsepower is of course better for the crazy steep hills on Madeira. It s a fair argument (cause the hills can get very wild and steep) but we decided to stick with our original order/rental. Finally when we got our keys we ended up with a Ford Puma (even though the gentleman said we d get a Opel Corsa). We didn t really ask question about that cause we considered it an upgrade, so we didn t complain. Maybe it was a gift for us first timers on this island. Maybe it was a whole gimmick to try to sell us a more expensive car. Not sure. But all in all the Ford Puma did a great job for us, and the company was easy to deal with for renting and return. Not to mention that the prices were much better than the competitors.

The price and car were fine, and pick-up and dropoff were easy. What I did not like were the agent trying to upsell insurance (50 euro/day) to every customer, slowing the line, and the dire warnings about their possibly keeping the 2800 euro required deposit. I also did not like having the tank only about 1/4 full (less than 65 km of driving according to the gauge) and the agent telling us it was about 3/8 full. I prefer getting a full tank. My son had a better experience with Europcar (also a better car, at slightly higher price).

Zeer vriendelijke pick-up en duidelijke uitleg! Uiteindelijk heb ik wel veel meer betaald voor de auto dan ik mezelf op voorhand voorgenomen had nadat er mij op de luchthaven ter plaatse nog een upgrade aanbevolen werd naar een wagen met een sterkere motor om in de bergen te rijden alsook een wagen die comfortabeler was om meer kilometers mee te doen en een peace of mind verzekering. Maar geen klachten!

Booked a Mini Convertible. Car was ready on arrival and the entire trip was trouble-free. The lady at the reception was courteous and gave genuine advise. There were attempts to up-sell but I guess that is kind of expected.

Alles hat super funktioniert, habe nur eine Debit Kreditkarte und konnte das Auto mit 300 Barkaution übernehmen. Rückgabe problemlos, Fahrzeug aus der Kategorie wie gebucht. Direkte Übernahme am Terminal. Würde beim nächsten Mal wieder hier buchen. Buchung erfolge aber über Sunnycars, nicht Madeira Rent direkt.

Be very careful! The employees are tried to rub you off your money by putting the guilt on previous damages on the car or on the airport parking car on you. The employees on the airport were very rude, arrogant and they give you no chance to defend yourself. I have the evidence that the damage made by the employee of this company was used in order to charge me with many EUROs. They took my money absolutely without any evidence without no chance to explain the situation, without my signiture or comments. I am making complaint against this company to the official autorities because they defrauded me as a consumer. I recommend to use rather traditional car rentals which avoid such practices against clients.

Depois de uma péssima experiência com a Surprise na qual me deixaram no aeroporto com uma criança só porque o voo atrasou fiquei sem carro , alguém lá no aeroporto sugeriu a Madeira Rent , não poderia ter corrido melhor , tudo perfeito , o carro foi-me entregue com alguns riscos mas estavam devidamente descriminados para não dizerem que tinha sido eu , o carro estava limpo e funcional foram 5 estrelas comigo , recomendo !

I was sick when we arrived and a cue of 20 people waiting. So we went to a hotel and tried to pick up the car the next day. They said that they can not keep the car for us for forever, even so it was fully payed for 2 weeks. Then they charged extra 430, for insurance because the credit card of my travel companion had not 2500 to block. My card did, but I was still in the hotel not feeling well. I would strongly recommend to not use this company.

I need help. We paid and everything was fine, but the deposit has not yet been returned to 100. It has been a while since I sent an email and there was no response. I checked the bank and went and you still have not sent it to me. We have had a month.
Bij aankomst aan de balie zou onze auto nog niet klaar zijn en zouden we voor een andere auto een toeslag van 20 euro per dag moeten betalen. Na een uur wachten kwamen we weer bij de balie en ze vertelden ons dat onze auto geen goede keuze was voor de bergen, en boden aan om voor 100 euro extra over te stappen op een andere auto. Wij hebben dit aanbod afgewezen, maar kregen alsnog de auto waar wij dan eigenlijk 100 euro extra voor moesten betalen. Ze proberen op 2 punten extra geld te krijgen. Personeel achter de balie is ook totaal niet vriendelijk. Nooit meer voor ons!

Excellent experience with Madeira Rent - relatively new cars with low mileage and in good conditions. Staff were very helpful and friendly all the way through the process, with everyone encouraging us to take photos and videos of the car before leaving. There was no hard sell on any additional products or services. Overall a great experience within the minefield that is car rental. Thanks!
